This section has been designed to help those new to the sport participate in their first orienteering event. It explains what you need to take part and what to expect at an event. It also describes the various types of orienteering events.

There may seem to be a lot to take in, but when you get to an event it should all be very straightforward. There are always people around to help newcomers so please make yourself known and we'll show you what you need to know.
What is orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport that exercises both the mind and the body.
Using a special orienteering map the aim is to navigate around a set course visiting control sites.
Courses vary in length from approx. 1.5km and technically very easy, to 12km and technically very hard.
Route choice can play a big part in the outcome of the results.

Who takes part?
Orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities and all fitness levels.
You can run, jog or walk, and progress at your own pace.
For the more serious competitors it is a challenging adventure sport and can be very competitive.
But orienteering is also very family friendly and promotes confidence and independence in young children. It gets them outdoors and provides them with physical activity and lots of fun.

Where does it take place?
Orienteering takes place in many locations including forests, mountains, country parks, local parks and urban towns and cities.

When does it happen?
This is an all year round sport and events take place at weekends. In the summer Wrekin Orienteers run Tuesday evening Level D events.

How can I find the right event for me?

There are four event levels:

Level A: These are major orienteering events with high quality terrain and age class competition courses. Events include The British Championships, and The JK.

Level B: Other major competitions on high quality terrain with age class competition courses.

Level C: Smaller competitions normally with 8 colour coded courses available. Events include The West Midland League.

Level D: Local club events, aimed at club members, newcomers and all level of beginners. Normally 3 courses available. These are low key events with an emphasis on having fun.
